Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of both black and white parents. She was raised on her mother's side. She recalled that growing up she was viewed as unwelcome by her peers due to the color of her skin. [3] Her parents were struggling financially and had to move 16 times to get her father's job. Despite this adversity, Russell mentioned how in her early days "there was always a chance for reinventing yourself, creating something new."As a child, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she was interested in pursuing a career in ballet and later to be a painter. Russell was just 18 when she began her first acting class. She used her savings from work to buy a car, and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. She would return to work when her cash was exhausted and would then begin auditioning again. It went on for four years until she was finally offered her first major television role.
